Community STEM Outreach program
Tapinos Lab launches a STEM project for URM Middle schools in Providence, RI Buffalo, NY and Worcester, MA!
Via a partnership with the 100Mentors platform, Tapinos Lab launches a STEM project aiming to inspire and mentor middle school students in Providence, RI Buffalo, NY and Worcester, MA from severely under-represented and under-resourced educational backgrounds. The program mission is to expand the access of resources, in the form of science mentorship and real-world bench and keep mentoring them from the middle school and through their high school.
Although there are initiative approaches meant for focusing on the under-represented minority students in STEM fields, most of these approaches target those minority students already in the STEM fields. A huge number of other minority students were overlooked because they were misguided, did not have the opportunity to access the resources or were oblivious about them. Our vision is to expand the resources for those overlooked students aiming to increase their interest in, entrance into, and preparation for STEM fields at early academic stages. To make this a reality, we are putting a brick stone for a multidisciplinary, early intervention, community partnership-based STEM mentorship program, with the aim of linking under-represented minority middle school students with STEM experts, researchers, science labs, health professionals, and current university students.
We seek to inspire students to imagine a career in STEM and to envision how science can make a positive impact in their communities.
